It is of critical importance to decide on the correct cultivar before planting.
If the incorrect cultivar is planted it can lead to thousands of rands worth of damage in later years, and these trees will be of absolutely no value.
These trees were planted years ago, but the incorrect cultivar was chosen, as a result, the trees had to be pulled out (using a tractor) and burned to make space for the correct cultivars.
In this particular land, once the old trees were removed and burned, and the land was ploughed and prepared, new olive trees could once again be planted. This caused a considerable loss to the owner in both time and money.
